These items didn`t form part of a shopping list or recipe but were among recent requested items for Swanley & District Food Bank. A vast array of these and other essentials donated by our ladies, greeted our October speaker Emma Boyes who came to tell us about her role as manager.
It was an enlightening and, at times, moving talk about how the system works. Many of us, myself included, previously assumed that the volunteers of the foodbank just gave out supplies and we had no understanding of the depth and breadth of the organisation. We learnt that volunteers also provide emotional and practical support, advice and information to enable applicants to move forward.
Importantly no-one is ever judged or ` sent away hungry `, but the ` vision` and aim of the Trussell Trust is a world where everyone has the resources, confidence and strength to live without the services of a foodbank.
Emma`s talk also included interesting practical information about the recent relocation and day-to-day running of the branch and it was clear that she combines her compassion and empathy with realism and efficiency. We were left with much to think about.
Other October events included an afternoon, led by Ian Kelly , when members were invited to update their first aid skills and learn about CPR and the use of a defibrillator. Again, much to think about….
November and December are looking busy with a wealth of Winter and Christmas meetings and events. Why not check us out?
