When we hear the name Monet, many of us think of paintings of water lilies and reflections in hazy blue lakes but these were scarcely mentioned by our speaker in March. Martin Heard`s talk, `The Gardens of Impressionism`, focused on the life of Monet, telling his story in the context of the gardens he created and loved, and which were the inspiration for his many paintings. Instead of lilies, we saw pictures of flower beds bursting with roses, irises, geraniums, dahlias and gladioli.
Martin ended his presentation by declaring that Monet was not only one of France`s most famous artists but also one of its most talented gardeners. Having gazed at the beautiful slides that he used to illustrate his talk, few of us would disagree.
We brightened the Winter months with a couple of daytime events: at the end of February we enjoyed a fish and chip lunch and competed in a mini picture-quiz ; in mid-March we gathered for a sociable afternoon , with tea and cakes, finding out what our monthly groups have been up to and planning ahead.
In April we will be discussing the resolution “Bystanders can be Lifesavers “, which calls on WI members to work together to increase confidence and training in CPR. This was chosen from a shortlist by WI members nationwide to be the focus of this year`s national campaign.
Interested in what we do? Visitors are welcome and you can look out for us at The Parish Meeting at the end of the month when we`ll be sharing some of our events and inviting you to sample our cakes.
