She home educated 13 of her children; was a patron of the arts, a follower of fashion, an expert needlewoman and an early feminist; founded orphanages and a world-renowned maternity hospital that is still running today; pioneered royal walkabouts and introduced the Christmas tree to Britain.
Who was this remarkable woman?
The (perhaps) surprising answer is Queen Charlotte, the queen consort of George 111 who served for over 57 years.
Our August speaker, Geoff Collins led us through the main events of her life making a strong case for his assertion that she was “a woman before her time”. As more details emerged it was hard to disagree. All in all, an interesting evening.
At the end of July many of us enjoyed a day out in Hythe. After a stroll by the sea and some browsing in the interesting shops along the High Street we sat down to a delicious Afternoon Tea at the Hythe Imperial.
Cakes were also on the menu at an informal `pop-in` session the following week – it was so popular, ladies are already asking for the next one.
At our September 4th meeting we`ll be hearing “A Nutritionist`s Perspective on Ageing and Brain Health” which sounds intriguing.
